Raw perlite
Perlite is a rock of volcanic origin, water contented volcanic material of that is expanded by handling with heat to multiple of its original volume.
This property are utilized by the insulation industry. construction industry and filtering industry. Hungary has a large deposit of perlite rock of excellent quality, that is sold in a lot of European countries.
FIELDS OF RAW PERLITE APPLICATION:
Construction industry
– heat insulation
– sound absorbtion
– light weight constructions
– fire defence
– heat insulatuion of ovens, kettles, tanks and in the metallurgy
– cryogenics (insulation against heat)
Food industry
– as filter material at production of beer, soft drinks, cooking oil
Pharmaceutical industry
– filtration of antibiotics
Agriculture
– melioration of soil, handling of liquid dung, pesticides – as a carrier
Environmental protection
– collection of oil spills ont he surface of water, filtration of water in pools
The fileds of application on perlite is continually expanding. In the countries where people think of environmental protection seriously, application of perlite products is broadening – instead of other artificila materials.

Raw perlite before expansion will be crushed, dried and milled. Then this product is classified. The structure water content in raw perlite grains varies between 2 – 5%
Analysis in laboratory :
The material coming from the mine and the mill will be controlled before its delivery as follows:
1. Capability for expansion |
In a laboratory furnace, grains of size 0,1-0,3 mm are expanded. The liter weight of the expanded product must not be over 35 g/l. |
2. Waste content |
The waste content of the expanded perlite is examined by wet separation. The waste content must not be higher than 5%. |
3. Surface humidity |
The milled perlite is dried at 105 °C until weight stability. The wet content of the milled product must be under 1%. |
4. Whiteness |
The whiteness is controlled by a leukometer of type Zeiss. The average whiteness of the milled perlite under size 0.125 mm is 45%. |
5. Strength |
The uniaxial compression strength of the perlite coming out of the laboratory oven is examined after the Brook-method by compacting to 20% and 40%. |
